School Meals

The food children eat in school is very important to their education. Not only does a well-balanced diet help with general health, but establishing healthy eating habits at a young age can set them on the right path for the future.

School meals are cooked on-site by our directly employed kitchen team, led by our experienced cook, Shyvonne Buglass.  The kitchen team are supported by Luis De Abreu, the Head of Catering for the Trust.   Not being part of the Bracknell Forest school meals contract means we have more control over both food standards and what we offer the children.  We tailor our menus to take into account the children's likes and dislikes to encourage maximum uptake.

All children in Key Stage 1 are eligible for a free school meal every day.

For Key Stage 2 pupils, payment needs to be made online via The price of a school meal is £2.20. We no longer accept cash for school dinners. On the using the website for the first time you will require a parentpay username and password which can be provided by the school office if required.

Meals are ordered in the classroom at morning registration.  Parents of younger children (Year R and Year 1 only)  can use the Order Form (see also Useful Forms & Documents) to plan meals, ensuring they are ordering something they enjoy.  Copies are also available in the school office and in Year 1 and Reception classes. As we aim to encourage children to be independent and take responsibility for their school life, there is no expectation that children use the form from Year 2 onwards.

Children are able to choose from a main meal, a vegetarian option or jacket potatoes. Salad and bread are available in addition.  The current menu can be found in Useful Forms & Documents.

Free meals are also available to children whose parents / carers are receiving Family Income Supplement.  Should you need help or advice about this  please see the School Secretary.

Healthy snacks (a piece of fresh fruit or vegetables) are allowed at breaktimes.  Children may have a NAMED bottle of plain water to drink in class throughout the day.

If your child prefers a packed lunch please provide it in a strong, named lunch box.  Sweets, chocolate, nuts and fizzy drinks are not allowed.  Drinks should be in a carton or plastic container.

School Meal Debt

As from 25th February 2019, Crown Wood Primary School will be adopting a strict NO DEBT policy relating to the provision of school meals.

If debts are incurred, then the school budget has to pay for them. This means that money that should be spent on the children’s education is used to pay for debts incurred by some parents.  We are sure you would agree this is both unfair and unacceptable.

It is a parents’ responsibility to ensure that their child is provided with a meal at school:  either a packed lunch or a school meal.  Parents are responsible for ensuring school meals are paid for in advance.

The Trust cannot and will not permit any debts outstanding. Therefore, a policy is required to ensure school meal debts are kept to a minimum.  Our overall aim is that meals are paid for, whilst aiding parents / carers during financial difficulties and ensuring children still receive a meal at lunchtime.  The policy can be read here.

If parents believe that their children may qualify for Free School Meals, they can contact the school office for an application form, call Bracknell Forest Council on 01344 352000 or visit:  This allowance is a statutory right and it is important that you use it if you qualify.  If there are other financial circumstances we should be aware of, however, you can contact our Pastoral Support Officer, Sandra Ruck, at in confidence.
